Green and Clean!

It all started when I was pregnant with my first child.  Every smell just made me want to .... you know.  What bothered me most is the smell of our cleaning products.  The chemical cleaners made my head spin while the floral and citrus scented were even worse.  I began to investigate all the possible "organic" cleaning products out there.  For a while we even used a monthly subscription service.  In the end, we realized that most of these products could easily be made at home for  1/4 of the price and since they are homemade there was no need to go shopping for them or wait for them to be delivered.  So here are some ways you can clean your entire home with basically five ingredients.

Vinegar is not just for salads!!!

Did you know that  distilled white vinegar is a tried and true disinfectant?
It kills both salmonella and E. coli bacteria.  You should purchase your vinegar in bulk since you will be using it for many different areas in your home.  One gallon of vinegar should run you less than $2.00 and will last you for approximately 6-9 months depending on how often you clean.

You can use vinegar in the kitchen to clean your traditional coffeemaker.  Simply run it with equal parts vinegar and water.  Half way through, turn it off, and let it sit for about an hour or so. Then let the cycle finish.  Fully disinfected and sparkling coffee machine!  You can also put one cup of each of vinegar and water in a bowl and microwave it for 10 minutes. The stuck on stains and food will wipe off in a breeze afterwards. This can also be done with lemons. but that  is later in the blog.  Next, you can pour about a cup of vinegar in the bottom of your dishwasher before you run the cycle.  Once you run the cycle, anything glass will come on sparkling with now cloudiness or film!

Another way to use vinegar is by pouring it into a plastic sand which bag. Stick your shower head into the vinegar and wrap the bag around the shower head with a rubber band.  Leave it on over night and rinse with water in the morning.  No more calcium or lime in your shower head.  Also, spray the vinegar directly onto the shower walls and doors/curtains to prevent any mildew from building up.

No more Windex... ever! Just one tablespoon of vinegar in a quart of water will give you the most streak free sparkling windows and mirrors you have even seen.  The best disinfecting cleaner is just one cup of water, one cup of vinegar and the peel of a lemon.  Let this concoction stand for 2-3 days and use it to clean bathroom sinks, toilet seats, none wood furniture, kids toys, the list goes on and on.

Baking Soda is a miracle!

Yes, baking soda can keep your fridge clean smelling for up  to a month, but it can also be a great abrasive for scrubbing tough stains and baked on food.  Sprinkle baking soda on your greasy pans full of baked on food.  Add some water and boil.  Turn off and let cool. The pan will be like new in no time.   Want stunning silver flatware? Make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water and rub the silverware.  Rinse with water and use a clean soft cloth to wipe. You can also sprinkle baking soda into your toilet bowl and pour some vinegar onto it.  Let it set a couple of minutes and then use a toilet brush to lightly scrub around the bowl.  Flush the toilet and be amazed at your brand new toilet bowl.

A bowl full of lemons!

Slice a lemon and put it into a bowl of water.  Microwave for one minute and wipe the microwave clean.  Plus the kitchen will smell lemony fresh.  If you rub your bathroom fixtures with lemon juice, sit overnight and remember to rinse in the morning.  You won't see lime scale for a very long time. If you make paste of lemon juice and cream of tartar and use an old tooth brush to scrub the grout in between your tiles. The stain removing power is really something to see.

Slice a half a lemon after scrubbing your stainless steel sink with baking soda.  Put the lemons in the drain catch and pour hot water on them for a couple of minutes.  The sink will be disinfected and smell like citrus heaven!

I hope you try some of these out and enjoy how well they work.  They are super inexpensive and great for the environment.  Thank you again for reading my little blog and till next post.
