All about the hacks
I have been on a search. A search for soft, cotton bin/baskets to serve as storage for kids toys, extra blankets by the couch etc. Though these things are not difficult to find, they are not inexpensive. Sure, you can catch a great deal at HomeGoods or the clearance section at Target but you will still end up paying between $15.00-$30.00 for something of quality.
I had also been on a quest for a specific stripe pattern and couldn't quite find it anywhere. One day, I took an impromptu trip to IKEA. Voila! I had found the SIGNE flatwoven rug. This baby was perfect and at $3.99 a pop I figured I could afford DIYing something out of it. So here are the simple steps to creating this awesome basket/bin/plant holder cover. All you need are the rug, hot glue gun, ruler and scissors.
1. Lay the rug on a flat surface and fold in half so that the fringe edges meet.
Then fold in half
repeating the meeting of fringe. Lay the rug so the fringe is to your left and smooth folded edges to your right.
2. Use a sharp scissor and make a 5 inch cut from the edge, approximately 3 inches from the right.
3. Open the rug up and fold the center flap up.
4. Run a thick beading of hot glue along the bottom of the folded rectangle. Quickly fold in the sides to create a "sailboat" look.
5. Run a thick beading of glue to secure the
two sided to each other. Let cool.
6. Flip the whole thing over and repeat the same steps on the other side. Let cool.
7. Open the bin up and glue the inside flaps to the sides for a more secure finish.
8. Lastly fold over the fringe all around the top about 2 inches.
I am loving the final product. I have put some spring blankets rolled up inside and placed it by the sofa. You can use any cotton washable rug or sturdy fabric for this project. Get creative and show me what you have come up with! I plan on making some pillow cases and a potted plant holder in the upcoming weeks. Hope you try this super quick and super fun DIY!
